Able Learner Checklist and Eligibility for OLP courses and the Da Vinci Group

OLP courses benefit academically able learners aged 7 upwards, who have either already gained, or who are targeted to gain the following UK National Curriculum Levels:

• L3 Writing by the end of KS1
• L5 Writing by the end of KS2
• L7 Literacy by the end of KS3
• 5 As or A*s at GCSE
  

Non-UK students who are already enrolled on a gifted programme are eligible to participate in our courses.

Learners who do not study the UK National Curriculum (e.g. home-schooled learners or non-UK learners) or those who are not performing at the above levels because of under-achievement, may find the following checklist useful.

A very able child may display some of the following characteristics:

• An advanced moral & social awareness
• Born leader
• Original, imaginative, creative
• Persistent, resourceful, self directed
• Can concentrate for a long time on one topic
• Unusual hobby
• Inquisitive/sceptical
• Argues well
• Shows initiative
• Versatile with many interests
• Advanced vocabulary
• Good judgement
• Well developed sense of humour
• Unusually introverted or extroverted
• Enjoys adult company
• Pays great attention to detail
• Grasps new concepts with ease
• Links areas of knowledge without specific teaching
• Very motivated
• Lateral or divergent thinker
• Easily reads maps, charts and diagrams
• Good memory for names, jokes, stories, trivia
• Likes playing board and strategy games
• Showed early language development
• Concerned with justice and fairness
• Perfectionist
• Becomes distracted if not academically challenged
• Becomes disruptive through boredom
• On the school’s 'gifted' register
